Camp Walden’s Bunk 11 Volunteers
Dear Parents and Bunk 11 Campers of 2014!
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at The Main Idea!
As you know, Walden’s Bunk 11ers are invited to stay for Main Idea and serve as Junior Counselors. Junior Counselors are a key part of the Main Idea staff. They help campers at activities, in the dining room, and in the bunk. It is an amazingly rewarding and challenging experience, which I am excited for each one of you to have.
I ask that all Bunk 11ers that are interested in participating in The Main Idea as Junior Counselors complete the online application by June 1, 2014. This application, along with lots of additional information on The Main Idea, can be found on our website: TheMainIdea.org. *Our website is currently being rebuilt, please be patient with our somewhat archaic sight.
The Main Idea is a non-profit camp for girls who come from lower income homes and might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend camp. Most of our campers return every year; Denmark, Maine holds a special place in their lives, as it does for you. The friends they make and experiences they have are very meaningful, and the committed counselors and junior staff have a lot to do with their positive experiences.
All campers must qualify for the Federal Free Lunch Program, and most get referred to the program by social service agencies. Meals are controlled by government guidelines and, as a result, there is no salad bar or peanut butter and jelly available during meals. Main Idea can accommodate vegetarians, but is unable to meet any other dietary restrictions.
The dates for Main Idea 2013 are August 20th – August 30th, with staff, including Junior Counselors, participating in a pre-camp training beginning in the afternoon of August 17th. We know that the dates of the program may conflict with the start of school or pre-season sports; however, I ask that all junior counselors commit to the entire program in order to create a stable camp environment for campers and help ensure a worthwhile experience for everyone.
In addition, I will be making accommodations for all Bunk 11ers during the time between the ends of Camp Walden and the beginning of The Main Idea. It’s a relaxing few days for the Junior Counselors to get out of camp, unwind and get some sleep! If you do decide to participate in Main Idea this summer I ask that all Bunk 11ers stay for and take part in this ‘in between” time together. We have found over the years that the transition between the two camps goes much more smooth for our “Bunk 11 Junior Staff” if they spend this time together.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I look for to hearing from you soon and seeing you all in June!
